Indigenous Saturday

Boozhoo! My name is Heather Friedli, and I am a first generation descendant of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians, Turtle Clan, with our tribe's traditional homelands on the northwestern shores of the state of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. I am also Meredith's paddling partner (and Artist!) for our sacred journey on the Huron River. As Meredith and I travel the length of the Huron River, we want to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Potawatomi nation. The Potawatomi are part of the Three Fires Counsel along with our tribe, the Odawa, here in Anishinaabe lands. We set out to honor this water by paddling it's entire length, from start to finish, not only to bring awareness of the PFOS and other environmental issues, but in a sacred, spiritual journey to bless these waters and bring healing and respect to the water which is sick. Please join me in learning more about the people of the lands in which we paddle by visiting the The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi's page at https://www.nhbpi.org/ Miigwetch!

About Me

Mer
I am an elementary school teacher, former camp director, mom to my amazing 3-year-old, and wife to my fellow nerd-of-a-feather. When not on the job, I love spending time in nature, canoeing, kayaking, camping, playing my banjo & ukulele, knitting, gardening, foraging for wild edibles, cooking, taking long walks with our rescue mutt, and having other small adventures with my family!
